9 Fall Activities to Get Your Kids Outdoors

As the weather gets cooler, it’s time to pack up the kiddie pools and other summer fun activities that got your family through the last few months at home. Searching for ways to keep your children entertained through the next season? Look no further than these 7 fall activities to get your kids outdoors.

1. Family Walk

Get the whole family outside with a walk (or bike ride, or scooter) around the block. Walks starting to feel stale at this point? Turn your walk into a game to find the most decorated or spooky Halloween house in the neighborhood.

Or, try a color walk. Pick one color and see how many things you can find of that color while you are wandering around.

2. Scavenger Hunt

Who doesn’t love a good scavenger hunt? Make a list of things your kids will find out in nature (bug, flower, fall colored leaves, a squirrel, etc.) and let your little scavengers hunt away.

3. Apple Picking

If you are lucky enough to live near an apple orchard, apple picking is a perfect fall activity for kids. Not only are they outside and entertained, but it’s also a great opportunity to teach them about where food comes from.

4. Play in the Leaves

A classic fall activity. Barring any allergies, jumping into a pile of freshly raked leaves is fun for any child. You could also create a maze by raking different paths through the leaves instead.

5. Obstacle Course

It doesn’t take much to make an obstacle course. All you need is a couple pool noodles to line the path, a pile of leaves to mark the finish line, or a hula hoop to hop over.

6. Have a Picnic

Fall fun doesn’t have to be complicated. Simply moving lunch from inside at the table to outside on a picnic blanket can turn a meal into an amusing outdoor activity.

7. Gardening

Sometimes, your kids are just happy to do what you are doing. So if your yard needs some attention, get them to help you! Even if “helping” means playing in a pile of dirt, you’ll be able to get work done and they’ll feel involved.

8. Lawn Games

From giant lawn dice to ring toss to backyard bowling, there are tons of easy lawn games you can buy for your kids. Or for an additional activity, DIY one of these games together.

9. Head to the Farmer’s Market

A local farmer’s market is a great place to pick up fresh and healthy food, and now you’ll be able to get some rich autumn produce. Plus, you can teach your kids about the seasons and how the harvest changes throughout the year.

These are some of our favorite (and easy) ideas for getting your kids outside to play in the crisp Autumn air, but there are so many more fun fall activities out there. The important thing is to keep your kids active, get some quality time together as a family, and enjoy your fall!
